When we moved to The White Horse we wanted to find out as much history about the pub, events at the pub and previous occupants as we could, plus the surrounding area and people.
A lot of the old photos and details are displayed on the walls of the pub, including the 1940’s (ish) ‘Dominoes match’, with the kind help of some of the older generation we were able to establish everyone’s name which was amazing.
We have also been able to find the names of previous landlords of the pub dating back to 1795, with some interesting human stories along the way. If you look at the entry for 1951 you will see James Chaplin listed as the landlord, when Mr Chaplin died Mrs Mary Ann Chaplin took over (his wife). Then in 1865 John Whitmore takes over, but following Mr. Whitmore’s departure a Mrs Mary Ann Whitmore takes over the pub. So did Mrs Mary Ann see off two husbands or was this just coincidence? If she did then she could have been in the pub for over 40 years.
